Your car is likely the most expensive technological gadget you own, and it’s something you use every day. For many people, the loss of a car would be detrimental to daily routines, such as driving to work and picking up groceries. It’s easy to take for granted the fact that you have a car, but then you hear statistics like, “a car is stolen every 47 seconds in the US.” For this reason, it’s a good idea to take some precaution to minimize the chance of car theft affecting your life.
Parking

You face the biggest risk of car theft when parking outside of a garage, particularly in a public place and at night. Many carjackers select cars that are left open. To avoid this common pitfall, always lock your doors and roll up the windows before leaving your car unattended. If your car has an installed alarm system, turn it on. Whenever possible, park in a populated area and, at night, select an area that’s well-lit.
Avoid Becoming a Target
Thieves may break into your car to steal stuff rather than the car itself. When exiting your car, hide all valuables such as MP3 players, GPS systems, cell phones etc. Similarly, if you’re out running errands, hide your purchases in the trunk rather than the backseat to avoid luring thieves to the temptation of expensive goods or wrapped gifts. While it’s an extreme method of theft prevention, some car owners choose to etch their VIN into all window panels to make their vehicles less appealing to carjackers who sell cars to chop shops.
Security Features
While alarm systems are standard in most new cars, there are many more security features flooding the market. Most notably, smart keys, also known as proximity keys, are making it much harder for carjackers to hotwire cars. If you have an older car, you can always use the good ‘ole steering wheel lock if you’re uneasy about where you leave your car.
